The LVP Revolution: Is Luxury Vinyl Plank Still the King of Flooring?
Let's talk about LVP. Luxury vinyl plank is everywhere. And I mean everywhere. It has become the default choice for homeowners and flippers alike. I even have it in my own house.
Why Everyone Is Obsessed With LVP
It is practical. It is waterproof. You can put it in every single room, including bathrooms and kitchens, without spending a second worrying about water damage.
My mother in law has those high end hand scraped wood floors. She literally follows us around with a towel if we drip a single drop of water. My floors? I do not care. Spill away. The peace of mind is worth the investment alone.
Built for the Chaos of Real Life
If you have kids or pets, you already know that traditional wood floors get destroyed. Scratches. Dings. Water stains. Even engineered wood cannot handle the daily chaos of a busy household.
I actually got a quote once to sand and restain our old wood floors. The price was $4 a square foot. When you realize that is basically the same cost as installing brand new LVP, the decision becomes a no brainer. From a budget perspective, LVP just makes sense.
Is the Trend Getting Overdone?
But here is my real question: is it getting overdone? Are we finally at the point where buyers walk into an open house and go, "Ugh, LVP again"?
Is it becoming the new granite? I do not actually hate granite, it is just easy to pick on because it was once the ultimate status symbol and now it is just standard. Are we seeing the same fatigue with vinyl plank?
The Only Real Durable Alternative
If you want something as durable as LVP but want to skip the plastic feel, the only real alternative is porcelain tile. But porcelain is way more expensive than ceramic. If ceramic chips, you see that ugly white clay underneath. Porcelain does not do that because the color goes all the way through. However, the labor and material costs for a full porcelain floor are on a completely different level.
Where Do We Land?
So where does that leave us? Are we stuck with LVP because nothing else matches its price and performance, or are we ready for the next big thing?
Do you still love LVP? Or are you over it?
